Why You'll Love This Pattern

  • Uses simple materials—paper napkins, a napkin ring or ribbon, no fancy tools required
  • Perfect for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, weddings, or romantic dinners
  • Beginner-friendly step by step origami tutorial for a polished look
  • Adds a warm and festive touch to your table décor

Skill Level

★☆☆☆☆ (Easy)

Materials Needed

  • 2 standard square paper napkins (one for the candle body, one in a contrasting color for the flame).
  • 1 napkin ring or satin ribbon (to hold the folds together)
  • Optional: Small decorative accents like faux holly or bells for extra festive detail. You could tuck these into your ribbon or napkin ring.

Instructions

Step 1: Open out both your paper napkins. Usually, paper napkins come folded into quarters.

Make sure the color you want your candle and flame to be is facing down.

Arrange your napkin to sit like a diamond shape.

Fold the bottom point of each napkin to meet its top point. You will end up with 2 triangles.

Step 2: Place the napkin you want for your flame on top of the other napkin, matching the edges.

Step 3: Fold the top point down slightly.

Step 4: Fold the top edge so that it sits about half way down the napkin.

Step 5: This is where you can adjust the height of your candle. If you want a shorter candle, fold the top edge to meet the bottom edge.

If you want a slightly taller and wider candle, fold the top edge down slightly about the bottom edge.

Step 6: Fold the right point up along the line shown.

Step 7: Roll the napkin tightly from right to left.

Step 8: Tuck the end of the napkin into the bottom. If you are having trouble with this or your candle won’t hold it’s shape, you could use a napkin ring or ribbon to hold the candle together. Or you could even secure it with a paper clip.

Step 9: Adjust the flame as you like. Completed candle napkin fold.

Tips For Success

  • Use high-quality paper napkins for cleaner, crisper folds.
  • For a traditional Christmas look, use a red napkin for the candle and a yellow or gold napkin for the flame.
  • Satin ribbon tied in a bow gives an elegant touch, while napkin rings offer a quicker option
  • Mix and match napkin colors to coordinate with your table setting.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

Colors don’t contrast enough: Pick two clearly different napkin colors for a more striking effect.

Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations

  • Classic Christmas: Red napkin with a gold flame and a green satin ribbon.
  • Elegant winter: White napkin with a silver flame and a sparkling napkin ring.
  • Autumn warmth: Burnt orange napkin with a yellow flame for Thanksgiving tables.
  • Romantic dinner: Deep burgundy napkin with a soft pink flame tied with lace ribbon.
  • Wedding chic: Ivory napkin with a blush or champagne flame and a pearl napkin ring.

FAQ

Do I need a napkin ring?

No. A satin ribbon tied snugly around the base works just as well. Or you could even use a chunky jewellery ring if you have one that fits, or a paper clip.

Can kids help make these?

Absolutely. This is a simple and fun fold for children to try with a little supervision.
