Step 18: Repeat steps 16 and 17 for the other side. Completed base.

FOR THE LID

Making the lid of the masu box is very similar to making the box itself.

Repeat the above steps for making the base, but when you get to steps 9 to 11instead of folding each edge to the middle, leave a small gap of about 1-2mm from the middle. Then follow through the remaining steps as above.

Tips For Success

  • Choose sturdy paper – This helps the box hold its shape and stand up nicely.
  • Make sharp creases – Use a bone folder or your fingernail to ensure clean folds.
  • Experiment with patterns – Double-sided paper creates a nice contrast when folded.
  • Go for unique paper – Try glitter paper, handmade paper, or printed designs to give your box a one-of-a-kind feel.
  • Match your theme – Color-coordinate your paper with the event, whether it's wedding-themed, birthday-inspired, or for the holidays.

Common Mistakes & How To Avoid Them

  • Box too loose? Use slightly thicker paper to help the box keep its shape.
  • Lid doesn’t fit? Make sure your folds are precise and all sides are equal in size.
  • Paper too flimsy? Use lightweight cardstock or thicker paper for a sturdier box.
  • Uneven folds? Double-check the alignment of your edges to ensure everything is symmetrical.

Color, Paper Ideas, and Variations

  • Bright and Bold – Use vibrant colors for festive occasions like birthdays or New Year’s celebrations.
  • Elegant and Classic – Opt for gold, silver, or white paper for weddings or holiday gifting.
  • Fun and Playful – Choose patterned or printed paper for a fun twist, especially for children’s gifts.
  • Gift Wrapping Twist – Add ribbons or bows to the top of the lid for a decorative touch.
  • Personalization – Write a short note or name tag on the lid for a personalized gift box.
